Republican Presidential Campaigns
It is becoming more and more clear that the democrats will have no competition in 2008. The campaigns of the leading republican candidates are essentially imploding. That's the reason that republicans all over the country consider Fred Thompson (!) their serious candidate who has a chance to keep the White House for them. Unbelievable.
Fred Thompson is not a serious candidate, except for wingnut thinkers of course. He is not even mediocre. He is bad bad. I hope that he will be the republican candidate, because then the democratic victory will be a landslide. He is some sort of a joke.
As for the rest of the field, here is what I think.
Rudy: As predicted, his campaign has irreversibly collapsed. It is becoming more and more obvious that he has no real principles, except being greedy. He is the only reasonable person in the republican party on social issues, but that does not mean much. He will be defeated massively in the primaries.
McCain: A sad case of a pathetic campaign from a terrible candidate. I can not believe that years ago I used to like the guy. He showed his real colors. A weak old man who desperately wants to be the oldest president in the history of the country. Unfortunately for him, he will not.
Romney: He is clearly the strongest candidate among republicans. He is charismatic, very appealing and smart. So smart that he did not hesitate to flip-flop on every major issue and transform from a Massachussetts liberal to conservative. He evn masked himself as anti-choice, anti-gay, whatever it takes to get votes. Unfortunately for him, he will be a victim of the bigotry of his own party. I dont think he has a chance to get elected.
As for the rest, they are more than laughable. A bizzare collection of religious fundamentalists (i.e. Brownback, Huckabbee) and bigots (Tancredo, Tommy Thompson), or completely irrelevant far-right wingers (Hunter, Gilmore) who can not be taken seriously. Ron Paul is the only serious guy in the group, but among most republicans, he is considered the "enemy" because he spoke the truth about Iraq.
