Lincoln Chafee
There were 2 senate races in these elections in which I think the best candidates lost. One was, of course, in Connecticut where 30% of the democratic voters proved that they were completely ignorant of what was going on around them and voted for an obvious adversary of the democratic party: Joe Lieberman. Ned Lamont was by far the best candidate in that race and he lost.
The other race was in Rhode Island. Lincoln Chafee has been a great senator, and it was sad to see him lose. I was thinking what I would do if were living in RI, and I decided I would have also voted for Whitehouse in this election, despite the fact that Chafee was the best candidate. For obvious reasons: It was of outmost importance for the sake of our country that the corrupt republican party loses control of the congress. Nevertheless, I think that if Chaffee had become independent 2 months before the election, he would have won by a landslide.
Chafee has nothing to do with the wingnuts, despite the word republican next to his name. He is far more liberal than many democratic senators and he has been a man of high integrity who really votes his conscience. He is the victim of the massive dissastisfaction of voters with the actions of the Bush administration. Interestingly, he has been fighting the Bush administration himself every step of the way. I hope that he will now leave the republican party and, somehow, find a way to run again for public office. It is so unfair that he lost his seat in these elections.
