The Collapse of the McCain Campaign
Is obviously on its way. There is no smoke where the is no fire. So, it seems that the NY Times story about McCain having an affair with that woman lobbyist during his 2000 campaign must be true. The story broke about 2-3 hours ago.
Although I dont like the guy and I can not stand republicans, I have to say that the fact that he had an affair should not be a reason for his presidential candidacy to end. It is a totally ridiculous reason. But, I have no doubt that it will. We live in the age of hypocrisy. And lets not forget that he is the presumed presidential candidate of a party controlled to a large extent by religious extremists and wingnuts. Even if he survives the acute phase of the scandal, there is no way on earth that the religious right will get out in large numbers to vote for him in the general.
The question is what will happen now in the republican party. Will Huckabee push to get the nomination? or will Romney get back in the race? I suspect that, if McCain drops out over the next few days, Romney will get back in and will try to win. This election is becoming interesting.
