Retirement is a better option at 88
The case of Robert Byrd, democratic senator from West Virginia, is kind of sad. He is an 88 year old man who wants to be re-elected in the senate in 2006. Of course, West Virginia is a red state, and James Dobson and other religious wingnuts have a lot of supporters there. Dobson has previously threatened several democratic senators, including Byrd, that if they vote against conservative judges in the supreme court, he will mobilize the religious right to vote against them in 2006 during their re-election. So, Byrd decided to listen to the religious lunatics and vote and support Alito. Of course, in his statement he tried to justify the decision in a different way. And here is what he said:
"But I am not one of those Senators. I refuse to simply tow the Party line when it comes to Supreme Court Justices. Of course, I am a registered Democrat. But when it comes to judges, I hail from a conservative state. And, like a majority of my constituents, I prefer conservative judges - - that is judges who do not try to make the law ".
Well, based on this statement, he either can not understand the seriousness of the election of a right-wing radical like Alito in the supreme court or he tries to find excuses. In either case, what he did is unacceptable.
It sounds to me that he is not fit to serve as a senator anymore. He is 88 years old. He should retire. Or if he wants to remain somehow active, he should go and work as a volunteer somewhere. I a hospital, a shelter for the homeless, something that will be good for his spirit. Voting to destroy the freedoms of Americans is not a good thing to be doing at the age of 88.
