Bush Administration, Science, and Divine Intervention

The top climate scientist at NASA says the Bush administration has tried to stop him from speaking out since he gave a lecture last month calling for prompt reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases linked to global warming. The good news is that Dr. Hansen said he would ignore the restrictions. "They feel their job is to be this censor of information going out to the public" he said.

It is not surprising that this administration employs such tactics against science and scientists. After all, this is an administration in which certain religious lunatics (i.e. Dobson, Falwell) have some indirect influence (by delivering election votes for them). The Bush administration has caused severe damage to several scientific research areas over the last 5 years. For instance, not only it has blocked federal funding for stem cell research, but its policies have led to a dramatic decline of funded projects in essentially all biological research areas. In reality, there has been more than a 50% decrease in funding in these areas, as compared to when Clinton was president.

But who needs science and research? The Opus Dei philosophy of the Bush administration is more "cost-efficient". It can be summarized like that: "Dont waist your time in unecessary scientific work. No reason. Just pray and divine intervention will fix everything". The only problem is that this approach has not worked well for Bush himself. As it stands now, he is certainly the worst president in the history of the country. He desperately needs some divine intervention to reverse such legacy.
